ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) has gradually been gaining more attention and awareness over recent years. Some sceptics like to contest that it's a made up condition which was brought about as a result of our hyper-connected lifestyles and modern day stresses. This is far from the truth... ADHD can be detected using a brain scan. It impacts upon neurotransmitters, norepinephrine and dopamine. The brain's frontal lobe (area responsible for decision making, weighing up consequences and planning) has been shown to be underdeveloped in ADHD leading to impairments and deficits.
There are three main sub-types of ADHD: combined type, inattentive type and hyperactive/impulsive type. Combined type is the most common in which the individual exhibits both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive features.
The first line of treatment for ADHD is stimulant medication. Exercise, diet and sleep can also be helpful in managing the condition.
